Can Dua alter Destiny (Taqdeer)?

Question

Respected mufti saheb,

Kindly explain what is the meaning of the hadith that if there was anything that could change destiny, it is dua.

Jazakumullaah khairan

May Allah accept your humble efforts.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Muhtaram Brother,

You refer to the following Hadeeth:

Translation: Nabi () said: Nothing can change the Divine Decree except dua.

(Jamiut-Tirmidhy, Kitaab Al-Qadr)

The issue of taqdeer (destiny) is very delicate and intricate. One should not unnecessarily delve into the complexity of taqdeer.

The Hadeeth could mean one of the following :

  • The Hadeeth refers towards the importance of making Dua. Dua is a weapon of a believer. Allah Ta’ala appreciates his slaves begging him and seeking His mercy. Shariah has emphasized on making dua to Allah Ta’ala. Dua is so powerful that it has the potential to avert taqdeer. This is an expression of emphasis.[1]
  • Allah Ta’ala decided that at a specific time, such a person would avert a difficulty because he will make dua to Allah asking for protection. Therefore, Allah Ta’ala already destined that one will make dua to Allah and his taqdeer will then be changed as a result of his dua.[2]

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
