Is it permissible to hold Black Friday Sales?

Question

Is it permissible to hold a black Friday sale?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Black Friday is an informal name for the Friday following Thanksgiving Day, which is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. “Black” refers to stores moving from the “red” to the “black,” when accounting records were kept by hand and red ink indicated a loss and black a profit.

The concept of “Black Friday” is purely a business-marketing concept and does not hold any religious or cultural connotations.

Accordingly, it is permissible to hold Black Friday sales.

Black Friday generally attracts huge crowds; Muslims should maintain their dignity and nobility while shopping.
