Question

Ibn taymiyyah stated: ‘the penis is like an udder when it is squeezed it will keep producing, but if it is left it will dry out’

Is this statement correct?

After finishing urinating and doing istibraar, I go away and come back later to check if there is urine drops and when I do istibraar for the second time or third time urine still comes out (although there is no leakage without istibraar again).

Please advise.

Answer

Lets look first at the Istibraa issue.

There are two terminologies that we need to understand here:

  • Istinjaa: The use of stones or mudstones and water.

  • Istibraa: to seek easiness and contentment from anything that will exit thereafter from the private parts.

Is written in ‘Raddul-Muhtar’:

“Its compulsory to do Istibraa by:

  • Wrapping a tissue and placing it by the penis and go for a short walk, return back and remove the tissue

  • By coughing

  • Leaning the body towards the left side

(Raddul Muhtar Vol 1, Pg 558, Darul Alimil Kutub)

In regards to Ibn Taymiyyah’s statement, this is mentioned in Majmū‘ al-Fatāwa, 106/21.

From our understanding, Allahmah Ibn Taymiyyah is trying to explain is: Do not exaggerate too much in Istinjaa, once you are satisfied and you have done Istibraa then this will suffice for your purity. As spending too much time in the lavatories and toilets it’s not a good practice.

So in a minimal time do your Istibraa and Istinjaa. Once you are satisfied do not keep touching and pressing the penis.

Only Allah knows best.
