Question:

Asalamualaikum,

Hazrat, is true that some Ulama consider Hussain (RA) not to be haq in his rebellion against Yazid? Since other Sahaaba such as ibn Abbas/Umar/Zubair gave bayah, and warned Hussain (RA) not to go to Kufa, but he insisted. I know many of the narrations regarding Karbala are weak/fabricated, and in particular Yazid, but in your opinion do we consider Hussain on haq, Shaheed, and Yazid is somewhat blameworthy.

Answer

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

In the conflict of Hussain raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him) and Yazeed, Hussain raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him) applied his own ijtihad (independent judgement) and was a mujtahid in this regard.

As he had considered it impermissible to pledge allegiance to Yazeed and therefore it would not be appropriate for him to pledge the allegiance. In addition to this, Yazeed did not have the right to force him to take the pledge.[1]

Although this is an issue of ijtihad, according to the Ahlus-SunnahWalJama’ahHussain raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him) was upon the truth (Haq) and is a shaheed(martyr).[2]
