Question:

I am working 125KM away from my hometown, have rented a room close to my workplace. I visit my family every week on Friday and return on Monday to work. My work place has the prayer room and prayer is conduct in congregation. Do I need to shorten my prayers and can i join the Jammath prayers ?

Answer:

Bismillah

Assalamualaikum

Once a person intends to travel 54.5 miles and intends to stay there for less than fifteen days, then he is considered as a mausafir. (Extracted from al sharh al thameeri, pg.223, vol.1 khatmenubuwwat academy.)

A musafir will shorten the fardhsalah of zuhr, asr and esha. However, if he is reading behind a non-musafir, he has to follow the Imam and complete the four rakats.

In your case you are considered a Musafir so you will shorten your prayers if you read alone, however if you read with the Imam you will read full four rakats.

Ikhtiyar, pg.80,vol.1, matba’ah al halabi

Raddulmuhtar, pg.130,vol.2, darulfikr

Only Allah knows best.
