Question:

Should fingers be spread or circled in Tashahud.

Answer:

Bismillah

It is a sunnah of the Prophet of Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) to make the fingers circled and not spread.

Saaiduna Wail Ibn Hujr raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him) reports ‘I saw the Prophet of Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) make a circle with his thumb and middle finger, and lift the one next to it (the forefinger) praying with it in tashahud’.   (Sunan Nasai p.187 v.1 & Sunan Ibn Majah)

Saaiduna Abdulah Ibn Umar raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him) said “When the Prophet of Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) sat for tashahud, he placed his left hand on his left knee and placed his right hand on his right knee, and he formed a ring like, and pointed with his finger at “La Ilaha”. (Sahih Muslim)
