Question:

Question: My relative works in a news channel as an accountant, He has gifted me many things such as watches, notebooks, e.t.c. He had also gifted me many edible items such as candies ,e.t.c. My question is that is it halal for me to consume the edible items and use the watches, e.t.c .If not please clarify what to do with these items.

Jazakallah-hu-khair

Answer:

Bismillah

In the above mentioned situation, the source of the income will have to be looked into.

If the majority of the income which the News Channel generates is from a Halal source, there will be no harm in accepting gifts or to eat from the wealth of the person working there.

However, if the majority of the income is not from Halal sources, the gift or the food from the person cannot be accepted. (Fatawa Aalamghiri, volume 5, page 420. Dar ul Kutub ul Ilmiyyah & Alashabah wan Nazhair, page 96. Dar ul Kutub ul Ilmiyyah)

If it becomes apparent that the majority of the income is not from Halal sources, the items that have been previously gifted will need to be returned to the person. (Radd ul Muhtar, volume 9, page 553-554. Dar ul Kutub ul Ilmiyyah)

As Muslims we should not take any chances that may possibly jeopardise our Hereafter. Any situation that may put us in doubt in regards to any item being Halal or Haram, the safest option should be adopted.

This is a lesson which we learn from the Prophet peace be upon Him, as can be found in the following Hadith:

  1. On the authority of an-Nu’man ibn Basheer raḥimahullāh (may Allāh have mercy upon him), who said:

I heard the Messenger of Allah () say, “That which is lawful is clear and that which is unlawful is clear, and between the two of them are doubtful matters about which many people do not know. Thus he who avoids doubtful matters clears himself in regard to his religion and his honour, but he who falls into doubtful matters [eventually] falls into that which is unlawful, like the shepherd who pastures around the boundary, only grazing therein. Truly every king has a boundary, and truly Allah’s boundary is His prohibitions. Truly in the body there is a morsel of flesh, which, if it be whole, all the body is whole, and which, if it is diseased, all of [the body] is diseased. Truly, it is the heart.” (Bukhari Volume 1, Page 70. Maktabah Rahmaniyyah)

  1.  Al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him), the grandson of the Messenger of Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him), and the one much loved by him, who said:

I memorised from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): “Leave that which makes you doubt for that which does not make you doubt. The truth brings tranquillity while falsehood sows doubt.

(At-Tirmidhi, Hadith No.2518, Volume 2, Page 214. Altaf and Sons) Imam At-Tirmidhi has classified it to be a Saheeh (authentic) Hadith.
