Is a job relating to TV licences permissible in Islam

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

Question:

If company A has a contract with company B where company A does work on behalf of them (outsourcing). The work is about TV licensing (take queries/collect debt from customers and input data for customers who want a new license). You are not selling/promoting anything, Is it permissible to work for this company?

Answer:

Bismillah

The Islamic principle is that something, which may be used for lawful purposes, is permissible to sell. (Taqrir Tirmizi p.221 v.1 & Takmilah Fathul Mulhim p.551 v.1)

Televisions can be used for a permissible aspect i.e. watching an Islamic programme, therefore, it would not be considered totally forbidden. Therefore, the aforementioned job would be considered lawful.
