Is giving a goat in sadqah an appropriate way to help my brother’s health according to Shariah?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
My name is Waqqas Akhtar S/o Anis Akhtar. I am mailing in regards to a masla. I have a younger brother named Md. Salman Akhtar, aged 23. He was premature by birth, was weak initially, but he gained good health by Allah’s grace Alhamdulillah as he grew up. From last 2 years he has been getting ill very often. He has stomach upsets; he got dengue and infection in umbilical cord, now he is suffering from liver infection and hepatitis. He has become very weak. He is always wondering something. Relatives are saying to give a goat in sadqah. I wanted to know if this is appropriate according to Shariah and if anything else can be done. I request you to please reply as soon as possible.

(Fatwa: 406/L-170/TL=1434)

Sadqah removes troubles, so there is no harm if animal is given in charity with the intention that Almighty Allah shall make him healthy with its blessings. It should be noted that while doing sadqah the specification of animal in this way that it shall make healthy is not correct rather you can give money etc with the same intention instead of animal. In some places animal is slaughtered or given in sadqah with the intention that the exchange of life is life. It is baseless. Hadhrat Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanavi (رحمة الله) writes: “Likewise, it is a particular custom among commoners rather prominent ones that they slaughter animal on behalf of a sick person, they do it to remove evil etc. So it is learnt with established sings that slaughtering is intended and it is considered as effective in removing evil in the state of illness, therefore it seems to be unlawful.
