How can you tell if chickens are halal according to Islamic rite?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
Are those chickens halal on which it is written that “slaughtered by hand according to Islamic rite?

Answer

(Fatwa: 1715/1715/M=1433)

If the chickens come from such an area where most of the population belongs to kuffar or such Ahl Kitab (People of Book) who do not slaughter as per the Shariah then it is not enough to write halal on the zabiha [slaughtered animal]. If it is known surely that it has been slaughtered as per the Shariah then it shall be halal; otherwise one should avoid eating it. But if it comes from Muslim area then it can be consumed.
