Can I break a promise made to Allah before its due date?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
I promised to Allah that I will not be chewing Gutkha or Pan Masala till 31st December 2012 due to infection in my mouth. Now it has become well by the blessings of Allah but my promising period is not over yet. Can I breakdown that promise which I gave to Allah? And can I chew Gutkha or Pan Masala now? Please give me answer from the holy Quran or Sahi Hadith.

Answer

(Fatwa: 1219/1315/N=1433)

When you promised Allah not to chew Gutkha or Pan Masala till 31st December 2012 then you must not consume these things till 31 December 2012 though the infection of your mouth is removed; otherwise you shall break your promise which is unlawful and haram in Shariah. However, you will not have to pay any kinds of kaffarah such as fast etc as the promise without the word of oath does not carry the ruling of oath rather it is better if you give up Gutkha and Pan Masala forever as these things are injurious to health as per medical reports.
