Are there any restrictions on giving Zakat to a mosque in order to pay off its loan?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
In our village we have a mosque. Recently we the villagers bought some land for the mosque and paid some amount in cash and some in loan. My question is that can we villagers give our zakah in mosque to pay its loan?

Answer

(Fatwa: 1729/1358/B=1433)

It is not lawful to buy land for mosque with loan money. Similarly, it is not lawful to give zakah money in order to pay the loan. The land should be purchased purely with donation money and the debt should be paid with the same money.
