Can I pay zakah for two years at once when I have the money, and how much is it in Indian rupees?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
I got married in September 2010 (after Ramadan). My wife has around 1000 grams of gold and around 200 grams of silver jewels. Since I am an elder son of my family, I have paid and still paying my father’s and my debts. I have to pay loans till next year (Dec 2013). I cannot sell my wife’s jewel to pay the zakah or I cannot do anything to do with the jewels since it is with my parents. They will not allow me to sell it to pay zakah. Even this year I will not able to pay the zakah due to my financial position. Is that lawful if I pay pending zakah (2 years) after I get the sufficient money? How much I am supposed to pay zakah in Indian rupees?

Answer

(Fatwa: 1413/1046/D=1433)

If your wife is the owner of the jewelleries then zakah is wajib on her. You can pay her zakah with her permission. It became wajib to pay the jewellery in zakah hence it is not good to delay and wait for cash, it is better to pay some jewellery in zakah. However, if zakah was not paid then you will have to pay the zakah of this year in future, but you will be sinful for delay. It is wajib to pay 2.5 percent as zakah for one year. The price of gold should be learnt from the market.
