What and how is the ‘Throne of AllahÂ’? The safest and clearest belief is what was held by the Companion, their followers and later by the Sufis i.e. that the human mind is unable to comprehend fully the Self and Attributes of Allah, it is useless rather harmful to venture into the subject. In short, one should only believe: ‘whatever Allah meant by these words (like arsh) are true and right, one should not pursue to find out their meaning. Hadhrat Imam Malik was asked what does the verse استوی علی العرش (settled on His Throne) mean, he deliberated a little and said: the meaning of استوی is known but the nature of this position is beyond the reach of human mind. We are asked to believe this much only. It is bidÂ’ah (innovation) to ask question about the nature of it.
