What makes an adopted child a mahram or non-Mahram to their adoptive parent/s?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
One of my aunty is trying to adopt a baby child as she do not have any child of her own. Please reply that this adopted child when grows up, whether he will be a mahram or non-Mahram to my aunt?

Answer

(Fatwa: 1353/1085/B=1433)

It is lawful to adopt a child. But one shall not become real relative merely by adoption. When he would grow up he would become mahram and it shall be necessary for your aunt to observe purdah from him. Thus, before he is a grownup she can nourish him.
