Is Investment Banking software Halal? What advice for Muslims working in software for Banks?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
I am a Software Engineer employed in Software Company in Chennai. I have one doubt upon my job/salary being Haram or Halal. The narute of my job is to design and develop software for my > client. My client is into Investment Banking and Stock Trading Business, which they can use for their transactions involving interest ofcourse. The client pays to my company where I am working and in turn my company pays me the salary. a) So I want to know if creating sofotware for Bank/Other finnancial institues such as Investment Banking will be Halal. b) Will my salary be Halal. c) Most of the software companies are having their majority of the clients as Banks. So if at all it is HARAM to work in the software company working for Bank , then a lot of Muslim people are involved in this jobs. What do u suggest to them?

Answer

(Fatwa: 420/409=D)

To design and develop such software which are used in financial institutions and such institutions where no interest transaction is carried out, is lawful. If you supply them directly to interest based institutions then it will be helping in sin and thus disallowed. But, if you are not supplying rather your company supplies it then you will be allowed to receive the salary. It is to be noted that you should avoid such acts which amount helping in sin.
