Is it mandatory to give Azan before namaz if one is not near a mosque?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
Assalam-0-Allykum, i am master stuent at KTH, stockholm, sweden. i want to ask that is it mandetory to give Azan before namaz or not? Because in paksitan there are alot of mosque and when they give Azan then we pray in mosque or in our home but here in sweden it is not the case. the mosque near to me is about 1.5 km away where i live and 2km away where the university is and it is not sure that Azan is given there or not because most of people visit mosque only on Jumma. if we want to pray in our room with Jummat then we should give Azan or not and similarly if i want to pray alone in my room or university then should i give Azan or not? some times while travelling the time of namaz come so what should i do? should i give Azan and pray on side of road or in some corner or i should pray with out Azan, or it will be better to pray in my room on return but the time of prayer will be finished. Jazakumullah Khair!

(Fatwa: 2073/1904=D/1429)

When five times salah are being performed in time then calling Azan and Iqamah is sunnah though one performs individually or with Jamat, whether at home or in journey. But, in town (population) where azan is called in a mosque, if any person offers salah at his home, it is not Sunnah for him to call Azan, since the azan of local mosque is sufficient for him, he will not need to call Azan separately. If there is no mosque around you in Sweden where you may hear the Azan of a mosque, then it is sunnah for you to call Azan where you are performing salah in the University or in your room, whether you are performing salahindividually or with Jamat.

In journey, if there is no mosque around, then also it is Sunnah to call Azan and perform salah. If you fear that the time of salahmay pass or you may miss it, then you should perform it during the journey though on the roadside:

قال في الدر وهو (الاذان) سنة مؤكدة للرجال للفرائض الخمس في وقتها (شامى 291:1)

وكره تركهما معا لمسافر ولو منفردا وكذا تركهما بخلاف مصلي ولو بجماعة في بيته بمصر أو قرية لها مسجد فلا يكره تركهما إذ أذان الحي يكفيه (الشامي 219:1)
