Is it permissible to eat fermented food with alcohol content?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
i have a doubt. tamil nadu is famous for idly and dosa.doubt is that the rice is made to paste[ata].they keep it for one night.and then cook .within one night fermentation takes place and its quantity rises due to formation of a kind of alcholic subtance.this also causes us to sleep as soon as we eat that. my doubt is that it is allowed to eat such subtance or not?

Answer

(Fatwa: 711/530=L/1430)

There is no intoxication in idli and dosa. Rice also does not become intoxicant by keeping for one night, likewise formation of alcoholic substance will not make it unlawful if it is not intoxicating. Therefore, it is lawful to eat it, though it causes sleeping. But, if some idli or dosa causes intoxication, it will be regarded haram (unlawful).
