Can Zakat be given to cover the cost of a Cochlear Implantation Surgery for a poor Muslim family?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
One of my friend’s kid need to undergo surgery (Cochlear Implantation Surgery) to get hearing ability. The cost of operation will be more than 6 LAKHS. Father of this kid cannot afford this cost, as he is hailing from poor family. From our friend’s circle, we would like to contribute for this surgery. Can our contribution be given with Zakkaat Niyyath? Will it be accepted as Zakkat? Patient family is muslim and father’s earning is very less. Please pray for this kid.

Answer

(Fatwa: 1030/813/D=1431)

It is lawful to give him zakah if he is poor i.e. he does not possess gold, silver, cash money equal to nisab or they do not reach equal to nisab if put together. But it is makrooh to give him zakah money equal to nisab. So if the said person fulfils his requirements by taking debt and after receiving zakah repays the loan, it will not be makrooh because it is allowed for a debtor to take zakah equal to the debt amount, but it is makrooh for him to collect money from people.
