Is it permissible to name a baby girl AYAT?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com

Is it permissible to name a baby girl as AYAT?

Does the Ulama of Deoband have any difference with Dr. Israr Ahmad of Pakistan?

Answer

(Fatwa: 473/J)

(1) It is not right to name a daughter by Ayat. Preferably one should keep a name that has good meaning and context. It is narrated in a Hadith that you will be called on the Day of Judgement by your names and the names of your fathers; therefore you should keep good names. (Ahmad, Abu Dawood, Mishkat, Kitabul Adab, Babul Asami, p 408) Therefore, it is recommended to keep the names of the Sahabiyat and the well-known pious women, or a meaningful good name; since names have effect on the personality of the children.

(2) We are not well aware of Dr. Asrar Ahmad. We do not know his beliefs and viewpoints. If he has beliefs different from those of Ahlus Sunnah wal-Jamaah then the Ulama of Deoband can not agree with him.
