Can I pay the loan from my zakah fund if I don’t have enough for sadaqah?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
My sister has own house and son is working in a company. Recently their son got married and they (sister and husband) migrated (three months ago) to USA leaving a big amount of loan. Their income is not enough to save money yet. One loan they took from their relative on interest basis. I asked them why they took loan on interest basis. They asked me to pay off and will not do it again. Can I pay the amount from my zakah fund? I do not have enough amounts to pay as sadaqah.

Answer

(Fatwa: 1447/1141/B=1433)

Give your zakah money in the hands of your indebted sister and bahnoi (your sister’s husband) and make them its owner then they can pay their debt with this money. If you give your zakah directly to the lender then your zakah shall not be paid.
