Can non-Muslims be employed and income accepted? What businesses are not Shariah-compliant? What is the Islamic view on pictures of people/living things?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
Assalamu Alaikum! This is a great service and may Allah ta’ala grant us all his Qurb. I work for a company whose owner is a Muslim and a Hafil, Aalim. It is an internet search engine. My questions are: 1) Is it okay for us to employ non Muslim women for work? 2) Is the income from such ghair mahrams and non Muslims halal for us. 3) Can you provide us if possible only a list of non-shariah compliant businesses? 4) Regarding the inclusion of pictures of people and living things, please update us on the Islamic view in this matter. Jazakallahu kahairan, May Allah ta’ala make this a cause for our spiritual progress. Your earliest response is expected.

Answer

(Fatwa: 1157/1099=B/1430)

Due to fear of fitnah, it is unlawful for a Muslim to employ women in his company. But, if it is severely needed or it is expedient, precautionary measures should be adopted strictly so that the fitnah is curbed, like (a) arrangement of veil for all women without any discrimination, (b) ban of meeting of male employee with women employees but in exigent cases, (c) the women are asked to work only in daytime and they should be given necessary protection.

(2) The income from such non-mahram and non-Muslim is halal and lawful.

(3) You should study related books of Fiqh.

(4) Inclusion of pictures of living being is forbidden (haram) as per the Shariah: إن أشد الناس عذابا یوم القیامۃ المصورون (الحدیث)
