What does Islamic Ulama say about family planning?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
Asalaam u alikum. I am a medical doctor working in reproductive health. I plan to write an article on family planning in the legacy of Islam, and need Islamic Ulama’s view(esp from Ahnaf Fiqah)about this issue. Could you please provide me enough information with reasons in this connection?

Answer

(Fatwa: 979/831=D/1430)

Adopting a method or medicine which permanently removes the reproductive capability is unlawful for a Muslim. The Quran says: ولا تقتلوا اولادکم خشیۃ املاق Putting a stop to birth due to the fear of increasing population is intervention in the divine system. Allah promised to provide sustenance to each and every creature He created: وما من دابۃ فی الارض الا علی اللہ رزقھا

The Hadith also forbids the same:

قال عبد اللہ: کنا نغزو مع رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ولیس لنا شئ، فقلنا: ألا نستخصي؟ فنھانا عن ذلک۔ (البخاری 759(

We cannot give you details about this matter in a short fatwa. If you want more information, you should study Fatawa Rahimiyah 10:181, published from Karachi. Likewise, see Fatawa Mahmoodiyah 18:307 and Zabt-e-Wiladat ki Sharyee Haisiyat by Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani.
