Assalamalaikum, Dear Mufti sahab I want to know if there is any ideal amount to fix the Mahr for marriage or if there is any calculation to decide it. What shariat tells about deciding the Mahr amount? Jazak Allah.

Islam has fixed the minimum amount of Mahr ten Dirham and 30.618 gram according to current weighing. Mahr should not be fixed less than it. However, one is free to increase it according to one’s standard. It is sunnah to fix Mahr Fatmi. It is not lawful to fix high Mahr for the purpose of hypocrisy and pride.
