How can I differentiate between sperm/mazi/mani/Ihtelaam and know when I need to take ghusl?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
Usually I observe small spots or lines in my underwear so I think that I lost taharah. Most of the times I don’t even think of sex when these spots occur. I don’t know whether it is (sperm/mazi/mani/Ihtelaam) on underwear . To be frank I don’t the difference between them. Please let me know how would I differentiate this and under what circumstances I need to take ghusl?

Answer

(Fatwa: 102/174=H/1430)

Ihtilam (wet dream) means: emission of semen with lust while sleeping, while mazi (pre-seminal fluid) is fluid discharged due to foreplay with wife etc, it intensifies lust. Mani (semen) is discharged with lust whether in the state of sleeping or wakefulness, and instead of intensification in lust it causes relaxation. This is the difference. While the ruling is that if mani (semen) is discharged with lust whether in the state of sleeping or wakefulness, it will require ghusl, while if only mazi (pre-seminal fluid) is discharged and no semen is discharged with lust then ghusl is not wajib, but only wudhu is wajib. If mani or mazi is smeared with cloth or body, the particular part of body and cloth gets impure. If fluid is discharged without lust, it is called wadi. If you are not feeling lust and you find spot of any impurity on underwear or pant, so it is wadi, it did not require ghusl. But, if one sees such spots after getting up and one is not sure whether it is discharged with or without lust, then ghusl is wajib. And in wakefulness, if one is sure of such spots being discharged without lust then ghusl is not wajib.
