Is it okay to only pray Fardh salah and not Sunnah muakkadah?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
If somebody is not praying salah at all and if he starts with only fardh salah and do not pray Sunnah muakkadah. Is he doing right? Will his salah be correct please explain in detail about fardh and Sunnah muakkadah. Will without Sunnah muakkadah salah be complete and is there any sin leaving Sunnah muakkadah.

Answer

(Fatwa: 431/419/N=1433)

The ruling of Sunnah muakkadah is that a person who misses it continuously without a valid reason shall be sinful. (Shami, 2/451) And he shall be deprived of the intercession of the holy Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) in the hereafter. (Shami 9/487). No doubt, it is better to offer salah than not offering it but one should offer Sunnah muakkadah with fardh. Sunnah and Nafl salah bring perfection in fardh and they make up its shortcoming. Hence the fardh salah are valid without sunnah muakkadah but it is a sin to miss sunnah muakkadah without a valid reason regularly and cause of deprivation from the intercession of the holy Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم).
