What does Islam say about using money that has been earned through haram means?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
If a person has accumulated some wealth by haram means say (by working in a bank, or by stealing, or by earning through interest etc) but now he wants to earn through halal means and starts a halal business but through the money he earned by haram means? So can he start his business with that money that he had earned before?

Answer

(Fatwa: 211/211=M/1429)

It is in Dur-e-Mukhtar: الحرمة تتعدد مع العلم بها it means that when a thing is known as haram (unlawful), its unlawfulness is transmittable. Therefore, it is not good to start lawful business with money earned by unlawful way. The stolen money must be returned to the owners or his heirs. It is necessary to give the interest money gotten form a bank to the poor.
