Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
As’salamu alaikum Mufti Sb., In our Office both Muslims & Non-Muslims are working. Due to Islam country, in general both Muslims and Non-muslims are told Salamalikum each other. My usual practive is while Non-muslims was told Salamalikum, I was replied him just Walaikum(One Mowlwi told me to respond non-muslim brother like that only). But my friend non-muslim, while I was told just walaikum, he asked me why u r not told Walaikumassalam. Kindly advise me how shall I manage with him.

The Molvi sahib is right. In response to a non-Muslim’s greeting one should only say: wa?alaik or hadakAllah (ھداک اللہ).
