If someone sneezes and does not say Alhamdulillah, is it obligatory for those who hear it to say “Ya Rahmakullah?

If some one sneez and does’t say alhamdullilah or may be saying silently,is it obligatory for person who is hearing to say “ya rahmkullah???

Answer

(Fatwa: 931/931=M/1430)

If the sneezer does not pronounce al-hamdulillah, one is not required to respond him with yarhamukallah; since in this case he does not deserve dua. Yes, if he says al-hamdulillah, one should respond him:

قوله (ورد السلام وتشميت العاطس على الفور) ظاهره أنه إذا أخره لغير عذر كره تحريما ولا يرتفع بالرد بل بالتوبة في تبيين المحارم تشميت العاطس فرض على الكفاية عند الأكثرين وعند الشافعي سنة وعند بعض الظاهرية فرض عين قال النبي إن الله يحب العطاس ويكره التثاؤب فإذا عطس فحمد الله فحق على كل مسلم سمعه أن يشمته رواه البخاري
