Is it Halal or Haram to accept gifts from parents when no dowry is demanded in Indian society?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
As I know than demanding dowry is Haram in Islam and using dowry items will not be valid. I would like to know that I DO NOT DEMAND anything, still girls parent give somethings like cloths or other material like bike, almirah etc either because of love or because it has become a general custom. Now which is Halal and which is Haram..? 1. Things given to girls like jewels etc.. 2. Things shared by both like bed etc. 3. Things given only to boy like bike or cloths etc. Please provide me the answer in detail keeping in view the current customs in indian society.

Answer

(Fatwa: 998/D=151/K=1432)

(1) The prevalent custom of dowry is non-Islamic. It involves pomp and show along with other evils. It is haram to demand it. Hence this practice of dowry should be stopped. But, it is not haram for daughter and son-in-law to take that gifts which the parents give to them willingly in love, rather it is allowable to accept it. However, one should avoid following the custom in taking and giving the same i.e. it should not be considered necessary to give the goods with nikah. However, it is allowed for the girl to take jewelleries etc and she shall become its owner. But, the parents should note that due to it her right of inheritance will not come to an end. (2) The person shall be owner of what he was given. (3) The boy shall be owner of the things. It is allowed for him to take it provided he has not demanded the same and has avoided following the custom.
