What is Cetyl alcohol and what does it do when applied to the face?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
Cetyl alcohol is present in 7 days cream which is used as a face moisturizing cream. Is the use of this cream is lawful ornot. It is Jaiz or Mushtaba?

Answer

(Fatwa: 138=137/L)

Nowadays, the alcohol used in creams is generally from potato, wheat, petrol etc. It is not made of grapes, dates and raisin. Also, there are some more ingredients that are added. Therefore, it will be allowed to use it and it will not be regarded as impure and unclean:

وان اتخذت من غیرھما فالامر فیھا سھل علی مذھب ابي حنیفة رحمہ اللہ الی قولہ و لا یحکم بنجاستھا (تکملة فتح الملھم 3/608)

But, if it is proved that the alcohol used in the cream is from grapes or dates, then it will be prohibited and there will be no way to use it.
