Should I give zakat on properties I am not living in or renting?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
I have few questions regarding zakah: When you own a property (land) which you are not using for yourself like living or renting. You bought these for the children and you want to give them (for example) after 20 years. Do we require to pay the zakah on these properties? Or in future if we sell them how many duration we pay the zakah? Do we pay only for that year or all years? Kindly send me the reply.

(Fatwa: 1034/1040/N=10/1438)

(1-2) Zakah is wajib only on the property which is bought with the firm intention of selling. If some property is not bought rather one received it as inheritance or gift or at the time of buying there was no firm intention of selling rather various points were in the mind then zakah will not be wajib on such land. Rather if in future sometimes it is sold then too the zakah of previous years or that year will not be wajib. However the money which is received after selling shall be counted as general income and as per the conditions zakah shall be wajib on it.
