Is Rs. 600/- paid as income tax counted as zakah?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
I have an income of Rs. 35000/- per month as a govt employee. I used to pay Rs. 600/- per month as income tax. Will this amount be counted as zakah or not?

(Fatwa: 892/892/M=07/1435)

Income Tax is deducted by a government; it has nothing to do with Islamic zakah. You cannot count the amount which you pay in income tax as zakah. If you own wealth liable for zakah, then you will have to pay zakah separately. Zakah is the right of the poor and needy ones.
