Can I Pay Zakat to My Brother-in-Law Who Is on Medication?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
My brother-in-law had both kidney failures. He had a kidney transplant. We collected Lillah, zakah, sadaqah etc for operation. Now after operation rest of life he has to take expensive medicines, which is cost 80000 Rs per year. His family’s total income per year is around 100000 Rs. Can I pay my zakah to my brother-in-law?

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

(Fatwa: 958/746/D=1434)

If your bahnoi (husband of your sister) is poor and eligible for zakah i.e. he does not own gold, silver, cash, or unnecessary goods (that are not used in daily life) equal to nisab which is 612 gram silver price then he shall be considered poor and eligible to receive zakah. You may give him zakah money for medicine.
