Medication and Fasting

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by CouncilofUlama.co.za

Q: Someone is HIV positive and has to take medication day and night. Does he have to to fast in Ramadaan?

A:If an upright Muslim doctor says that he has to take his medication and he cannot fast then he does not have to fast. He can just pay fidya for every fast that he misses. If he recovers then he should make qadhaa of all the fasts which he missed. If he never recovers until he passes away the fidyah will suffice inshaallah. Fidyah is equal to sadaqatul fitr.
