Epilepsy and Fasting

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by CouncilofUlama.co.za

Q: A lady who suffers from epileptic fits have not been fasting for some years but every Ramadhan she takes out Fidya for her fast. She was told recently that she has to fast for all the years she missed but she still get fits but not so bad but she is very weak and when she does fast by Magrib time she is about to collapse. What should she do?

A:If a pious Muslim doctor says that she is still unable to fast because of her sickness then she does not have to fast the missed fasts. The fidya would suffice. If he says that she is able to fast then she should commence fulfilling her missed fasts. Likewise she will have to fulfill her missed fasts if she recovers in the future.
