Q: Will zakaat be valid by offsetting the debt with the intention of zakaat?
A: The zakaat will not be valid by merely offsetting the debt with the intention of Zakaat. However, if a person gives the debtor the money as zakaat and thereafter takes it back as a payment of his debt, Zakaat will be discharged. (Shaami 2:271)
