I am so depressed when in menses. What is the solution?

Answered according to Hanafi Fiqh by AskOurImam.com

Assalam u aliekum warahmatul lahi wabarakatu I feel lost and unconnected to ALLAH (SWT) when I am in my menses get so depressed by this that I keeps on crying all the time, I don’t feel like doing anything like eating, drinking or doing house hold chores. Can you give me some suggestion on what to do…? Can I recite Durood Shareef or anything to bring peace in my restless heart?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Sister in Islam,

When a woman is in the state of purity, she performs salāh and makes tilāwat of the Qur`ān; that generates a spiritual light in her. The absence of the spiritual light is felt during menses when salāh and tilāwat cannot be done. The absence of the spiritual light could lead to experiencing grief. This condition is natural for women.

Consider the following narration:

Al-Qasim narrates, “I heard ‘A’isha (may Allah be pleased with her) say, ‘We set out with no other intention than to perform hajj. When we reached Sarif (a place near Makkah), I started to menstruate. Allah`s Messenger (peace and salutations be upon him) came by me, while I was crying, he said, ‘What is the matter? Have you started your period?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘This is something that Allah has decreed for the daughters of Adam so do everything that someone on hajj does but do not do tawaf of the House.’ … “[Sahīh al-Bukhārī, and many other places; Sahīh Muslim]

In order to maintain your spirituality even during menses, you may still engage in the remembrance of Allah, listen to the recordings and lectures of our great scholars, read Islamic books or recite any āyah of the Qur’ān in the meaning of duʿā or praise (and as long as it is recited as a du`ā or to seeking blessings from and not for the purpose of recitation)[1].

Furthermore, at each salāh time, even while in the state of menses, you may perform ablution[2], sit on the prayer mat for the duration to perform that particular salāh, and make zikr of Allah, recite durūd sharīf and make du`ā[3].
