What can I do and pray so that the situation of the baby in the womb does not deteriorate?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by AskOurImam.com

Salaam. I am 6 months pregnant and my doctor has discovered my baby has a very rare abnormality where there is a hole in his / her diaphragm. As a result, the stomach is in the chest near the heart, and part of the intestines. There are less than 70 cases ever reported in SA. The baby will need major surgery after birth and be kept in NICU, with 60% chance of survival.

My husband and I were initially devastated when we heard the news, but have since accepted this is the will of Allah. I know that there is great power in duaa and I`m hoping Mufti will be able to assist me with duaas or wazifas to be read so that the situation doesn’t get worse In sha Allah. And so that the lungs don`t get squashed by the other organs and are able to develop. My next scan will be next Friday, so I would like to read as much as possible till then and blow on my stomach.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated, may Allah reward you abundantly. JazakaAllah

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Indeed, accepting the challenges of life as a decree of Allah is the greatest support for a believer. May Allah grant you the strength and courage to overcome this challenge. Ameen.

We hope the following may assist you:

  1. Entertain complete belief and faith in Allah. Remember every matter is under the command and will of Allah. Allah says:

And if Allah touches you with hurt, there is none who can remove it but He; and if He intends any good for you, there is none who can repel His Favour which He causes it to reach whomsoever of His slaves He will. And He is the Most Forgiving, Most Merciful[1].

  1. Place your trust and pleasure in the destiny of Allah. We are unable to comprehend the wisdom behind the wondrous ways of Allah. Allah tests his servants to see who amongst them are patient, best in actions and righteous in their belief. Do not be despondent in the mercy of Allah[2]. Allah says:

Say: Nothing will afflict us save what Allah has ordained for us; He is our Lord Supreme; and in Allah let the believers place their trust[3].

  1. Make abundance of Istighfaar (asking Allah for forgiveness). Allah says:

I said: Ask forgiveness of your Lord, verily He is the most Forgiving. He will send rain to you in abundance and provide you with money and children, and orchards, and streams[4].

  1. Increase in extending salutations on Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) and reflect on his exemplary life and his noble trait of patience. The life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) provides contentment, courage and hope.
  1. Give something in Sadaqah (voluntary charity). Verily, the giving of Sadaqah cools the wrath of Allah[5] and Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) said:

Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity[6].

  1. You may read the following supplications:

ربنا هب لنا من أزواجنا وذرياتنا قرة أعين واجعلنا للمتقين إماما

Transliteration: Rabbanaa hab lanaa min azwaajinaa wa zurriyyaatinaa qurrata a`yun waj alna lil muttaqeena imaamaa

Translation: Our Lord, grant us wives and offspring who will be the coolness of our eyes and make us leaders of the righteous[7].

رب هب لي من لدنك ذرية طيبة إنك سميع الدعاء

Transliteration: Rabbi hab lee min ladunka zurriyyatan tayyibah innaka samee ud duaa

Translation: My Lord, grant me from you righteous offspring; verily, You are the listener of all prayers[8].

You may read the following supplication thrice in the morning and evening:

بسم الله الذي لا يضر مع إسمه شيئ في الأرض ولا في السماء، وهو السميع العليم

Transliteration: Bismil laahillazi laa ya dhurru ma`a ismihi shay un fil ardi wa laa fis samaa wa huwas sameeul aleem

Translation: In the name of Allah, with Whose Name nothing on the earth or in the heaven can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing[9].

  1. Supplicate to Allah particularly at the time of Tahajjud. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

Verily, Allah descends to the nearest heaven in the last third of the night and proclaims: Who is supplicate me so that I may respond to him, who is asking from me so that I may grant him, who is asking for forgiveness from me so that I may forgive him. [10]

  1. You may also pray Salaat al-Haajah. The following is the method of the prayer[11]:
  • Make perfect ablution
  • Observe two Rak`aat Salaah
  • Praise Allah
  • Send salutations on Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)
  • Recite the following supplication:

لاإله إلا الله الحليم الكريم سبحان الله رب العرش العظيم الحمد لله رب العالمين أسئلك موجبات رحمتك وعزائم مغفرتك والغنيمة من كل بر والسلامة من كل إثم لا تدع لي ذنبا الا غفرته ولا هما إلا فرجته ولا حاجة هي لك رضا إلا قضيتها يا أرحم الراحمين

Transliteration: Laa ilaaha illallaahul haleemul kareem subhanallahi Rabbil arshil azeem alhamdu lillahi Rabbil aalameen as`aluka moojibaati rahmatika wa azaa`ima maghfiratika wal ganeemata min kulli birrin was salaamata min kulli ithmin laa tada` lee zamban illa ghafartahu wa laa hamman illa farrajtahu wa laa haajatan hiya laka riza illa qadhaytahaa ya arhamar Raahemeen.

Translation: There is no deity but Allah the Clement and Wise. Pure is Allah, Lord of the Tremendous Throne.  All praise is to Allah, Lord of the worlds.  I ask you (O Allah) everything that leads to your mercy, and your tremendous forgiveness, enrichment in all good, and freedom from all sin.  Do not leave a sin of mine (O Allah), except that you forgive it, nor any concern except that You create for it an opening, nor any need in which there is your good pleasure except that you fulfill it, O Most Merciful[12].

  1. After adopting the above, place your trust in Allah and submit to His decree. Allah is Al-Hakeem (The All-Wise). Every decree of Allah has hidden wisdoms in it which we may not be able to comprehend. Tafweez (submission) to Taqdeer (destiny) is a great form of worship and a high level of Iemaan.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
