The meaning of a name and suitable books on parenting in Islam

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by AskOurImam.com

Assalamualaikum,

(a) Would like to ask the meaning of a name for new-born. Could you explain the meaning of “Shifaan”? According to my exploration on internet its origin is Arabic. Is “Shifaan Rahman” appropriate/good name for new-born?

(b) Please mention some of the names of books/links on parenting according to Islam.

Thank you very much. Please pray for the straight path guidance from Allah for my family and all the Muslims.

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

  • It is advisable for one to keep names of Prophets (peace be upon them), Companions of Prophet (peace be upon him), and pious predecessors[1].

We could not find the word `Shifaan` in the Arabic language to be used as a name for a person. However, the word “Shifaa” means cure and the word “Rahman” means Most-Compassionate thus “Shifaa ar-Rahman” would mean the cure of the Most-Compassionate. It is correct to name a new-born baby with such a name.
