Following Imam who Wipes on Socks

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askmufti.co.za

Q: I pray my Zuhr Salah at a nearby musallah by my workplace. There is an Arab brother that leads jamat at times. I noticed him washing his feet few times during wudu, so I was quite happy and satisfied. Recently though, I noticed him do masah on thin dress socks. I joined the jamat, and he was leading the salah, but later on I performed my salah over again. Now, what I wanted to know, is my Salah from the past, which I joined Jamat and that particular brother was leading, valid or not?  Probably the ones that I noticed he had washed his feet but I am uncertain about the other ones. The other dilemma is that nowadays I avoid to catch the Jamat but wait or go earlier and do my Salah individually. Please shed some light on how to go about.

A: Masah on ordinary socks is not valid. However, as long as you are not certain for which salaah this Imam had made masah on socks, there is no need to make qadha. Just be careful for the future. If you followed him in a salaah after he had made masah on the socks, then repeat that salaah. Don’t worry about the past now.
