Black Beads for Children

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askmufti.co.za

Q: I would like to know when a baby is born and many parents put black beaded bracelets and small knives attached to the child what is this for and does it have any significance to our religion? Also I don’t understand the reason why a girl who has given birth has to stay with her mother etc for 40 days, not less?

A: Black beads and knives must be avoided, this is not in conformity with the Shari’ah and not substantiated. It is believed that it wards off the evil eye (Nazar) and this is incorrect.

It is not compulsory that a lady who has given birth MUST go to her mother’s house and that she HAS to stay for forty day.

Usually they go so that the mother can assist with the new baby because the new mother is still unwell. A daughter can tell and ask from her mother what she cannot impose on others. So it is okay for her to go (if she needs help) so that she can be assisted and may be advisable, but it is not compulsory and it is not necessary for her to stay at least forty days. Sometimes her mother comes to her (daughter’s) house, stays over and assists. Some ladies require that help and some don’t.
