Changing Name for Sick Person

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askmufti.co.za

Q: My son’s name is Zaid. He has always been quite unwell since birth. He has had various small illnesses and some major illnesses too. Is it permissible to change his name to something which will suit him more perhaps? Is Uthman a softer name?

A: Although permissible to change his name, there is no need to do so. Zaid is a good name. It is also a name of a Sahabi thus a blessed name too.

May Allah Ta’aala grant your son Shifaa, Aameen.
