Gold Coins and Zakaat

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askmufti.co.za

Q: I am liable for zakat as I have three gold coins in my possession. I do not have the funds to pay the zakat at this moment. Can I pay it monthly or must I sell one of the coins in order to pay my zakat liability?

A: Zakaat on these coins is only payable if they amount to 87 grams in weight. If that is the case then you must pay zakaat on those coins. You are allowed to pay it off monthly, in small amounts, If you do not have any fixed income, then ask your husband or a close relative to pay the zakaat on your behalf. If this is also not possible, then you shall have to sell one of the coins in order to pay your zakaat
