Tattoos in Islam

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askmufti.co.za

Q: Are tattoos allowed? Is it Makruh (disliked) or Haram (impermissible)? And what haadith can I read to find out more about it?

A. The Hadeeth warns that the curse of Allah Ta’aala befalls a person who tattoos others and the person who gets tattooed. (Aunul Ma’bood V9 P208). The threat of the curse of Allah for tattooing clearly expresses the gravity of this sin. Due to this and other technical reasons, tattooing is Haraam.

Allah Ta’aala knows best.

The Ahaadeeth regarding this are recorded in many Hadeeth compilations:

a)      An Nasa’i

b)      Shu’abul Imaan of Imam Bayhaqi

c)      Saheeh ibni Habbaan

d)      Bukhaari

e)   Muslim, etc.
