In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The story in question has been mentioned in Ibn Hajar al-Haytami’s (rahimahullah) Az-Zawājir ‘an Iqtirāf al-Kabāir[1] (v. 2, p. 129, Dar al-Fikr) and also in the popular book of major sins, Al-Kabāir (p. 48, Dar an-Nadwah al-Jadīdah), in the following words:

It is narrated that once, a wealthy man was travelling to the Baytullah to perform Hajj. When he reached Makkah, he deposited one hundred thousand dīnārs from his wealth to a man known for his trustworthiness and righteousness until he reached Arafat. Having stood on Arafat, he returned to Mecca to find that the man was dead. He asked the deceased’s family about his money, but they knew nothing about the money. And so, he went to the scholars of Makkah and told them about his affairs and (what had happened with) his money. They said to him, “Approach the Zamzam well at midnight, look into the well, and then call upon the man by his name. If he is from the people of paradise, he will answer you on the first call.” So the man went and called out by the well of Zamzam but heard no response. He went back to the scholars and told them about what had happened. They said, “To Allah we belong and to Him is our return. We fear that the man might be from the people of Fire. Go to Yemen where there is a well called Barhūt. It is said that this well is at the mouth of Hell, and call upon the man at midnight. If he is among the people of Fire he will answer you from it. The man went to Yemen and asked about the well. He was told about its whereabouts and so he approached the well at night, looked into it and called out “Oh so-and-so (by the person’s name)”. The man responded. He asked him, “Where is my gold?” He told him, “I have buried it in such and such a place in my house because I did not feel secure about the wealth from my child. Thus, go to them and dig it out. You will find it there.” Then, he asked him, “What caused you to be left in such a (horrible) place though we thought good of you?” He said, “I had a poor sister whom I abandoned and did not treat well. Thereby, Allah punished me because of her and casted me into this place.” [End] This story is corroborated by the authentic hadīth of the Holy Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam): “The person who severs the bonds of kinship will not enter Paradise,” referring to those who sever ties with one’s sister, maternal aunt, paternal aunt, niece, and other close relatives. And so we ask Allah Ta’ālā to give us the ability to obey him as he is the Most Generous, the Most Bountiful.

Before we answer your question, it is important to keep the following points in mind:

(1) The books mentioned above do not make mention of the source from which the story has been extracted from.

(2) There are certain elements in the story that point to realities that may be a point of controversy within traditional texts such as the mouth of hell being located at the well of Barhūt and the concept of being able to converse with the dead.

(3) When dealing with such types of narratives, it is difficult to separate fact from fiction, especially in light of the extraordinary events related therein.

All in all, the narrative mentioned above is neither a hadīth nor a saying of the Sahābah (radiyallahu ‘anhum) or the Tābi’ūn (rahimahumullah). It is simply a story narrated to compliment the message portrayed through the hadīth regarding the severing of ties of kinship. Neither can such a story be used to support our beliefs of the unseen (al-ghayb) nor can we use it as evidence to prove any Islamic doctrine.

In terms of authenticity, we were unable to determine the factuality and authenticity of the text. The authors themselves have also alluded to this as well by using the majhūl form of the verb “hakā” while narrating the story, i.e., instead of saying “So-and-so narrates…” they said “it is narrated…” without referring to the actual narrator of the story.
