Is zakat payable on sterling silver?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Is zakat payable on sterling silver? How do you find out the value of
the sterling silver?

How do you pay zakaat on bonds? A person took out a bond before
accepting Islam

When going on safar a person miacalculated the distance from his home
till his destination which is more than the musafir distance. He then
read qasar salaah. Later on he realized he did not calculate from the

than musafir distance do the salaah’s read as qsar salaahs need to be
repeated?

Answer

In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

We apologise for the belated response.

(1)   In order to find out how one should offer zakāt of sterling silver[1], one may enquire about the value of the sterling silver from a local jewellery store and therefore determine whether the amount of sterling silver in one’s possession is within the nisāb of zakat in silver (value of 612.35 grams of silver).

(2)    We require details of the type of bond you are referring to in order for us to advise you further.

(3)    In principle, when a person makes the intention of travelling 55 miles or more from his residence[2], he will be regarded as a musāfir once he leaves the city limits, meaning the furthest residential buildings of the city.[3]

The count of 55 miles will commence from leaving one’s residence with the intention of safar (travel). However, in order for one to be regarded as a musāfir, it is a condition that he leaves the city limits.[4]

Hence, if one travels 55 miles from his residence but remains within the city limits, he will not be regarded as a musāfir. If, on the other hand, a person has the intention of travelling over 55 miles from his residence and before completing 55 miles he has left the city, he will be regarded as a musāfir and will only begin to make qasr from that point on. This is regardless of whether his journey exceeds 55 miles from the boundaries of the city or not.[5]

Based on the above explanation, it is not necessary to repeat the qasr salāh provided that the distance between the person’s home and destination which is beyond the city limits was of 55 miles.

[1] Sterling silver is mainly an alloy of silver, consisting of nearly 92.5% fine silver and 7.5% other metals, like copper, which make it less expensive. Fine silver is composed of 99.9% pure silver, and it is a bit more expensive. That’s why it is used for making jewelry, and also in the photography industry.
