Can I have Non-Muslim reading partners?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I have a dilemma. I m a doctor. Doing my post graduation. We need reading partners. My both partners are non Muslim. Is it justified to study with them or I should leave them . I dont have any other options now.but still if it is against shariah then I will have to study alone. What should I do?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykumwa-rahmatullāhiwa-barakātuh.

If the two non- Muslims you refer to are the same gender as you, i.e; you are a male and they are also males, then you may study with them if there is a genuine need. It is important to ensure when interacting with non-Muslims you safeguard your Islamic values and practices. If you feel that you will compromise on your Islamic values and practices when interacting with them, then you should not do so.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
