Struggling to practice on Dīn due to sinning

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I am residing in Europe since many 3 years. I used to have beard but started trimming slowly and then shaved completely. Primary reason for doing that i was not making salat anymore and i was doing other sins in society e,g, drinking, Zina, friendship with girls, not lowering the gazez, with beard face. My nafs alwasy pinched me of beard face as i was a very gentle and good muslim in front of all muslim society and friends, but only Allah knew my reality, as i used to do these all sins hidden. Fingers Crossed…. Now i am shaved and my friends asking me that you was looking much better with beard face than what you are now.

Important thing is that when i was doing these all sins with beard face, it was also creating a bad image for muslims and especially muslims with beard. it is also true that the beard was a bar in my freedom to all sins. Anyway, it is true that the sins i did and doing are very bad and i should stop that but my question is 1) can i keep beard face again when i am not making any salat and doing all these sins, zina, freindship with girls etc. 2) Should i start making salat first, stop all sins, make me perfect and then grow up beard. 3) what if keep again my beard but less than a fist.

Answer

In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Respected brother in Islam,

One of the most essential factors in providing a solution to your issue is to completely stop and disassociate yourself from the sins you are involved in. There is no need for us to point out how it does not behove a Muslim to commit such harām actions as you well acknowledge that yourself.

It is the sins that you are committing that has become a dangerous obstacle from fulfilling your responsibilities as a Muslim. When one constantly commits a sin, it darkens the heart and the heart eventually becomes averse to any ‘amal (action) of Sharī‘ah. Be sincere in leaving sins by cutting off all avenues to sins.

In order to assist yourself from staying away from sins, it is best to try to ensure that you find yourself in a safe environment. It will definitely be beneficial to participate in the effort of Tablīgh in your local masjid. Give some time for this effort. Merely spending three days in Tablīgh may bring a revolution in your life as this has proven to be true throughout the world.

Furthermore, find the company of a Shaykh in your locality who you can relate to and who has imbibed the qualities of Taqwā and adherence to the Sunnah. Confide in him and adhere to his advice.

With regards to the beard, it is wājib for one to keep one’s beard to a minimum length of one fist throughout the circumference of the face and impermissible to trim the beard less than the length of one fist[1].

You ask when should you keep a beard and start performing Salāh again?

The answer is start immediately as soon as possible. Doing so only after you reform yourself from the sins is merely the whisperings of Shaytān who is trying to digress you further. Ignore such thoughts and stay strong. With the barakah of the beard, it will lead you to fulfil your obligations of Sharī‘ah and it will assist you in abstaining from sins. If you do commit sins, the solution is to make tawbah and not to remove the beard.

And Allah Ta‘āla Knows Best
