Reciting Qur’ān during hayd as a ruqyah against jinns

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I am an amila . Because of the nature of my work I am constantly attacked with magic and jinns . I am at the extreme end of these encounters for reasons to lengthy to explain. I deal with the very big Shayateen . I used to read quraan during haidh because originally I thought it was allowed (without touching ) I remained well protected . However I read somewhere that this wasn’t allowed . So I stopped reading during haidh. But since then the attacks on me and my family are so severe and I have been continuously ill and so have they . I have to maintain reading 3 surah albaqarah a day to remain protected . I wanted to know if this would be allowed in my case . I wouldn’t want to do anything haram because I know Allah alone is the protector.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Assalāmu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullāhi wa barakātuh

In principle, during hayd, it is only permissible to recite those parts of the Qur’ān which are in the meaning of dhikr (remembrance of Allāh) or du‘ā’ (supplicating to Allāh), like Sūrat al-Fātihah āyat al-kursī, Sūrāt al-Ikhlās, Mu‘awwidhatayn etc. This must be done with the intention of dhikr or du‘ā’ and not with the intention of tilāwah (recitation).[1]

It is not permissible to recite parts of the Qur’ān that do not contain these meanings. Large parts of Sūrat al-Baqarah do not contain the meanings of dhikr or du‘ā’, but are regarding stories of previous peoples, the afterlife, parables, laws and rulings, reasoning with non-Muslims and so on. Hence, it is not permissible to recite Sūrat al-Baqarah during hayd.[2]

In your situation, you may confine yourself to reciting verses of du‘ā’ and dhikr, like Sūrat al-Fātihah, āyat al-kursī etc. Alternatively, you may ask another person who is not experiencing hayd or janābah to recite for you the specific portion of the Qur’ān that you require.
